You may have heard of the Denver Nuggets’ point guard Ty Lawson, notoriously known for being below average on height, have a recurring sprained ankle, and being arrested on four separate occasions for driving under the influence. However, Lawson is not the first NBA player to have struggled with charges of driving under the influence, nor is he the last. In fact, the National Basketball Association has had many of their current and former players arrested on the same charge.

Big names such as Lamar Odom, Derek Fisher, Jason Kidd, Dennis Rodman and many others have all been arrested for driving while under the influence. Most recently, Hall of Famer Dennis Rodman was arrested in Newport beach and charged with driving under the influence. While initially being pulled over for a traffic violation, he failed the breathalyzer test given at the scene. This, like Ty Lawson, is not the first time Rodman has been in trouble because of alcohol. After attending an alcohol program in 2000, he was still checked into a rehabilitation facility in 2014. He is now checking into rehab for the second time, after his most recent arrest in Newport.

Driving under the influence has become a large problem in the NBA, and has been a problem for the last few decades. Police officers are strictly enforcing drunk driving laws in the United States, and it is important to remember that no one—even movie stars and professional athletes—is above the law. It is especially important for NBA players to remember this fact with how many children treat them as role models to emulate. These days, it is not difficult to find a cab, Uber, or friend to drive them where they need to go. It can be especially dangerous not only to the one driving, but to everyone on the road with them.
